BOOM XB-1: A SUPERSONIC TECHNOLOGY DEMONSTRATOR AIRCRAFT TO AID THE DEVELOPMENT OF A COMMERCIAL SUPERSONIC AIRLINER

For four decades, the speed of commercial air travel has largely stagnated.  Thanks to technological progress and increasing global demand for air travel, there is now a viable path toward widespread commercial supersonic travel.  Boom Supersonic is designing a new generation of supersonic airliners that will serve on hundreds of transoceanic routes.  Next year, Boom plans to fly a technology demonstrator aircraft, the XB-1, which will support the development of its airliner — a 55-passenger, Mach 2.2 aircraft with enough range to cross oceans.  This talk will explore the technological advancements that make the XB-1 and Boom’s airliner possible and the technical challenges of designing and testing a supersonic aircraft.
